Harnessing the Future: Hydrogen-Based Storage Solutions

Our hydrogen storage system works by saving extra solar energy as hydrogen gas. We do this through a process called electrolysis. In this process, electricity from solar panels breaks water into oxygen and hydrogen. Then, we can store the hydrogen gas until it's needed to make electricity again or to use as clean fuel.

Addressing Cost and Technological Challenges

Hydrogen storage, particularly on a large scale, faces significant obstacles:

  • Cost: The infrastructure for hydrogen storage, including pressurized tanks or chemical storage methods, can be expensive. Additionally, the energy losses in the process of converting electricity to hydrogen and back again can impact economic viability.
  • Technological Complexity: Managing hydrogen, especially storing it safely and efficiently, requires advanced technologies. Issues such as hydrogen embrittlement of metals and the need for specialized materials add to the complexity and cost.

By producing SNG, Enerphy Suisse leverages the existing natural gas infrastructure, which is a massive cost-saving measure. This approach circumvents the need for extensive new hydrogen storage and distribution systems. Moreover, SNG can be stored and transported using the same technologies and networks already in place for natural gas, significantly reducing the technological barriers and safety concerns associated with hydrogen storage.

Harnessing the Energy Future

Enerphy Suisse's strategy to combine hydrogen production with CO2 capture to produce synthetic natural gas addresses some of the most significant challenges in scaling hydrogen storage: cost and technological complexity. This approach is a smart solution to the hurdles faced by hydrogen storage, offering a viable path forward for large-scale applications.
